Big Man in High School, Undersized in College: Why Centers Need Guard Skills

In high school, you might dominate in the paint as a center. But once you move up to college or a higher-level league, your size advantage often disappears. Suddenly, you’re no longer the biggest player on the floor and if all you know is post play, you’re in trouble.

Why Guard Skills Matter for Bigs:

The Game Today is Positionless

At the next level, coaches expect everyone to handle, shoot, pass, and defend in space. If you’re 6’5″ and only know post moves, you’re undersized without a plan.

Stretch and Survive

Bigs who can stretch the floor, hit threes, and attack closeouts create mismatches. If you can’t shoot or dribble, you’ll get played off the floor.

Defense is Everywhere

Teams switch constantly. That means you’ll be guarding quicker players and need guard-level footwork and IQ to keep up.

At Unequaled Training Center, we train bigs to be complete players. We’ve seen too many dominant high school post players get to the next level and struggle to adapt. That won’t be you.
